Scott Draughon spent 30 minutes with Jean-Jacques de-Mesterton of WKRN and callers discussing music downloading on the internet and the litigation initiative of the RIAA. Scott underscored the importance of persuing lost sales to restore the economics of the music industry and raised the question of whether home downloading for personal enjoyment actually reduces sales. Scott noted that some defendants in the RIAA litigation initiative will find defenses under the copyright act, thereby significantly raising the complexity of the issue and the risks of the RIAA in persuing litigation against home users as a business strategy. Scott recommended proprietary technologies for distribution and persuing music sale pirates as an alternative to solve industry sales declines.
